Day 3:
GUIDED TOUR OF VENICE

The Floating City crisscrossed with romantic bridges, laced with history and boasting some of the world’s finest art and architecture. During your stay you will see gondolas glide down the Grand Canal before stopping in St. Mark’s Square. Look for the golden weathervane, which resembles archangel Gabriel, atop the 323-foot Campanile (Bell Tower). At the pink-and-white Doge’s Palace, see where mighty Venetian dukes once ruled. Stroll over the Bridge of Sighs, which links the palace to a prison. As they crossed the bridge, prisoners supposedly sighed with perfect sadness as they regarded their beautiful city for the last time.

ACqUA ALTA - "High Water"

I experienced Acqua Alta my last visit to Venice in November, 2004!
Acqua alta occurs when certain events coincide, such as:
  • A very high tide (usually during a full or new moon).
  • Low atmospheric pressure.
  • A scirocco wind blowing up the narrow, shallow Adriatic Sea, which forces water into the Venetian Lagoon.
The phenomenon is most likely to take place between late September and April, and especially in the months of November, December, and October, in that order. The Comune di Venezia's Acqua Alta publication explains: "In the remaining months, frequency is very low, while there has never been an event from June to August."

...but you never know!
